Bipped Bakery
BIPPED BAKERY
This series is a response to the (San Francisco) Bay Area‘s notorious car break-ins. Anyone who owns a car knows that it's only a matter of time till your car gets bipped*.
Regardless of the many commuting obstacles the Bay has, it will never outweigh all that it has to offer. This piece is a way to reclaim a taboo and try to spark a little bitter sweet joy for those who can relate.
*Bay Area slang for breaking into a car through the window, usually with the purpose of stealing whatever was left inside.
In just a couple walks around San Francisco and Oakland I collected more than enough broken glass from the street to work with. Cookies and pastries were sculpted and named after the different sites the glass was collected from. All the details are described on the Bipped Bakery Menu.
This series made its debut at Mini Mart Gallery’s Grand Opening in San Francisco.
Artist statement:
I’ve been living in the San Francisco Bay Area for a year and a half now, and my friends and family always ask what it’s like out here. When the topic of car break-ins comes up I find myself being embarrassed and saying, “it's really not that bad”, normalizing it as a lil quirk of living in the city. It will never outweigh all that the Bay has to offer, but when I park my car on a new street I wonder, “Is today the day I lose my catalytic converter?”
Anyway, I love the Bay. All the personalities, the galleries in the Tenderloin, the food and all the fusions, DJ’s, the views, Karl, and the community of artists. We’re all in a time of transition and transformation, and ‘Bipped Bakery’ is my way of trying to process it all while keeping it glassy.
