Graphite and sand glass (hot pour/ ladled glass)
6 person team
Completed over the course of 4 months
This piece was created during my career at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. Hot pouring glass (ladling molten glass) requires a significantly experience team. Barrels of water prepared for discarding used ladles coated in molten glass. Barrels of sand are sifted and process with clay and water to create the ideal consistency for forming what I call a reverse sand castle. The glass furnace is rated in temperature so the glass becomes more fluid. Large slabs of graphite were preheated. Acetylene is used to coat any sand molds with a layer of carbon. This production is a slow but carefully choreographed.
To train a group of artists and recreate the necessary conditions to attempt this piece again would be a large feat to say the least.
The current price is well below the actual value of the piece. My current priority is for my art to find a happy new home.
