Copper wire, hot sculpted glass, and ladled glass
8 person team
Completed over the course of a year
This sculpture is a self portrait of the black dress I planned to wear for my upcoming graduation ceremony. Displayed as a focal point during my senior thesis presentation with a dramatic red light referencing the signal use in broadcasting studios. Copper wires illustrate figurative gestures and wraps around the black dress.
This piece was created close to the end of my senior year at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In order to combine hot pour (ladling) and hot sculpting (blowing), the choreography of this piece was timed to overlap when the glass furnace was transitioning between the two ranges in temperature. Colored glass details were slowly rising in temperature in surrounding kilns as I sculpted the ears at one bench. On the other bench a large rod (punty) was prepared. Large slabs of graphite were preheated before all the components merged. Barrels of water prepared for discarding used ladles coated in molten glass. This group of 8 artists had been coming together on a weekly basis to practice the art of hot casting for at least a full semester before we stepped into this challenge.
To train a group of artists and recreate the necessary conditions to attempt this piece again would be a large feat to say the least.
The current price is well below the actual value of the piece. My current priority is for my art to find a happy new home.
