My work usually references symbolism from my Japanese heritage. But earlier this year I was thinking a lot about how America is in the process of developing its own cultures and traditions.
I decided to forge a symbol that could pass the test of time and the versatility of this fruit spoke to me. I love how bananas can range from breakfast-of-champions, a symbol of health, as well as comedy, and fertility.
I experimented by making a simple typical banana that most Americans would be most familiar with, then a larger one which I call 'Plantain', then 'Fresh Peel', and 'Perfectly Ripe' with the meat of the fruit exposed.
The Plantain is the largest piece in the Banana Series. Fried sweet plantain is one of my favorite treats. This bright piece is sure to light up any space and make people smile.
