Mossy Daruma is one of the first of a new series exploring the fascination around plants and the healing presence that something green can offer.
I myself am a plant person, but I understand that not everyone was blessed with a green thumb. This piece is also a way to include anyone who wishes they had more green in their life.
Moss is a soft visual representation of a flourishing landscape and for that reason offers hope. The irregular form is reminiscent of a rock formation but isn’t too jagged because of all of the green texture. You can see the edges of the Daruma’s face from the multi-step preparation and the cutting and carving that was involved in defining the outline of the face. Fire-polished and translucent edges on the bottom of the pieces and around the edges of the face reveal the material qualities of glass that reveal the magical origins of this sculpture.
The moss texture is also a new addition to my Daruma Series. I developed my won technique of layering and spooning (yes, using an eating utensil) to build up that feeling of growth. The base layer is a mixture of darker greens and the top layer is a brighter green. Using glass in a more painterly manner to highlight raised parts of the form as if theres fresh growth or perhaps sun kissed edges.
