The Daruma Series is an exploration of Momoko's Asian fem identity and its parallels to glass. Recreating traditional Japanese symbols using gold bearing and rare colors to subvert the perceived value of these rotund glass figures and their soft tones.
Kabocha, which means pumpkin in Japanese, brings a contemporary form to Daruma and pays homage to the queen of pop art. What most people don’t know is that glass pumpkins are a highly contentious topic amongst the glass community. This piece stands to prove that anything, including glass pumpkins, can be considered fine art.
This piece is the first of its series. As a result of developing the "Mask Technique" this larger scale Daruma was made possible. And even with this innovation in scale the piece took over a year to complete. Glass-mates from across the San Francisco Bay Area and Seattle were involved in the conception of this piece.
