Celebrating 5 years of living in San Francisco this painting was made to commemorate this milestone. This city is a cultural capital in many respects and has a vast number of neighborhoods. I would always find myself asking, “What neighborhood are we in?”, when venturing around new parts. I came to the realization that the only way I was going to learn was to sit down and create a map for myself.
Of course I could have made this endeavor simpler for myself with just a pen and paper, but I’m a tactile learner and I needed to devote more time in depicting the contours of each pocket. I referenced three different maps for my initial outlines and came to the shocking realization that none of them included Chinatown, Japantown, or The Castro District. The more maps I referenced I saw that even one of the most publicized neighborhoods, the Tenderloin, was not represented. I had no choice but to draw my own map of the city to capture how I have been experiencing San Francisco.
I have to admit I underestimated the difficulty of bringing this painting together. As my understanding of the city continues to evolve, I might consider painting another iteration of this map. To note the continued journey I left the bottom of the canvas exposed as a way to visually indicate “to be continued…”
If you are a San Francisco Bay Area native, I would love to hear your thoughts on my version of the city’s neighborhoods.
