Public Kabocha-ruma

Public Kabocha-ruma
Carved and hot sculpted glass
2022-23
13 x 13 x 10.5 in
33 x 33 x 26.75 cm
This piece was created during a glassblowing demonstration at Public Glass. Historically the glass community in the San Francisco Bay Area made hosting events in the glass studio part of the culture. This tradition inspired studios across the country to also showcase artists in action.
This unique addition to the Daruma Series was designed to incorporate a more intricate version of the Darumas, while confronting one of the most contentious topics in the glass world. Kabocha, in Japanese means pumpkin, and the topic of glass pumpkins brings endless debate amongst the glass community. More will be shared on this in the near future.
As the finale of the performance I invited glassblowers in the crowd to jump in and add their mark with a black polka dot. Bringing everyone on stage was my way of highlighting the community and showcasing them to the audience. My heart still pounds whenever I think back to the hundreds of people in the crowd and the way they all roared with each transformation and addition to the piece.
I would love to recreate this moment. Anyone who buys this piece will be cordially invited to attend center stage and add a polkadot to my next piece if they’re feeling brave!
